How to Soundproof a Door for Better Working Place Environment

The door is probably the trickiest part of the room in terms of trying to get some sound control that’s because it’s got gaps at the bottom where the door meets the floor. It’s got the little gaps where the door meets the frame and any little tiny opening between is an opportunity for sound a leak out or leak back in depending on which direction you’re going right.

In special cases like if you have a room where you are running a recording studio or hosting an online business conference. It’s probably even more important for us to soundproof a door to have a suitable working environment.

If that your working room creates the main connection to the rest of your house the probability of noise traveling in that direction is more. Even though you don’t have any neighbors or don’t have anyone above your floor or to the side of you then this door makes it really important to become soundproof.

You can get a soundproof door by replacing the door and installing a new soundproof door altogether. But if you live in an apartment somewhere you can’t make permanent alterations or just don’t really want to spend the money on something that you don’t personally own.

Although if you are on a rented property, you can end up making your door soundproof by doing a couple of things within the budget. Here are 5 effective solutions on how to soundproof a door for better working place environment.

1. Weatherstripping

First of all, you will need to get some weatherproofing strip from Amazon. Installing this strip around the entire doorframe creates a seal between the door and door frame limiting the traveling of sound. These strips are self-adhesive which makes installing it a breeze, just clean up the door frame with cloth, after that you are good to go.

2. Door Sweep

Almost every room door inside a home has a relatively large gap on the bottom. There is no use in installing a solid core door as a permanent solution. The open gap between the door and floor will allow traveling sound easily.

A Door sweep is an effective way to solve this error, as it will create a seal between the bottom of the floor and floor to ensure that you have minimal noise coming in from the other room. Door sweep not only benefits noise reduction but also helps to keep bugs and dust particles on the other side of the door.

If you are planning to install it on your door, first get clear that its installation is not that much easy as sticking weather stripping. As you will need to drill some screws in the door to make its hold on the door.

I will recommend a rubber sweep only as a plastic sweep doesn’t tend to last long. Also, avoid brush sweep as it does not completely seal the gap fails to block the noise travel. The door sweep is reusable you can easily unscrew it from the door, fill the left holes with white caulking, and bring the door sweep with you when moving out.

3. Seal All Cracks and Gaps

Check for any cracks or holes in door, it doesn’t really matter how large they are because even the tiny cracks and gaps would create a solid corridor irrelevant for noise.

To check cracks and holes thoroughly switch on the light outside of the room, close the door, and create darkness inside the room, and see if any light passes through cracks around the door.

If you see any light coming in from gaps or crack, you could find and fill the cracks with soundproofing sealant to control the sound leaking.

I will recommend going with Polyurethane Expansion PU Foam Spray which acts as a door soundproofing application by expanding it inside to fill the gap tightly.

4. Place a rug

Placing a rug along the door bottom helps in controlling the sound leakage, something you might not have thought of. You can get a thick rug and cut it down in size ideally fit underneath the door.

Another positive benefit of placing a rug next to the door will improve the acoustic of any room and will restrict the entry of dust and pollutants inside.

5. Door Closer

Although door closer will not directly aid in making the door soundproof, installing it will allow getting doors to close automatically when left open by chance. In windy locations, the auto door closer prevents doors from slamming against the wall or door frame indirectly helping in noise reduction.

Hope exploring these door soundproofing solutions strikes you which one to apply for yourself. I would suggest going with cheaper soundproofing solutions like door sweep, and weather stripping if you just need to dampen the noise. OR go with some costlier options mentioned above if you want noise reduction in a decent amount.
